Article about Lorenzo's Salon

Tressed for Success - by Ann Taylor (for 50+ Lifestyles)

Vero Beach - Until 16 years ago Joann Davenport was a desperate woman.  Every day was a bad hair day.  Her baby-fine tresses were limp, dull and uninspired.  They had no body, no shine, no style.  To add to her frustration, they were straight as a stick and there weren't a lot of them.

She'd tried everything.  Different hair cuts, shampoos promising volume, conditioners promoting shine, sprays, gels, mousses.  Nothing worked.

Then fate stepped in.

"I saw this woman and I liked her hair, so I asked her where she went and she told me Lorenzo's.  I decided to give it a try.  I came in and just told him 'just do                      something  -  anything.' "  Joann said with a spontaneous smile.  "He gave me this cut that made me look like I had more hair.  Then, when he got his root lifter in, he recommended that I try it, so I did.  It's fantastic.  I also use some of his other products."

The "Lorenzo" Joann has to thank for her stylish and far from fine and limp look is Lorenzo Shciavone, who for years had been listening to his clients complain about the condition of their hair.  For some, it was either too frizzy or too full; for others, too flat, too fine.  For Northerners who winter here, the Florida climate was frequently the culprit.

But more often than not, heredity is to blame.

"I like to work with hair  -  with what people have  -  and make it look the best that it can." said the congenial hair and color specialist whe two years ago introduced his own line of hair products to the mix of what is seen on the shelves of his Vero Beach salon.  There among displays featuring Biolage and Nexxus shampoos and conditioners, are rows of colorful bottles bearing the label "Lorenzo's Hair Design & Spa."

"The reason we do - and everyone here has tried the products and signed off on them - was for our customers.  We felt so many companies haven't been keeping up like they used to.  Take the climate we have here, the heat and humidity - a lot of shampoos you buy don't address that.  So we said let's see what we could come up with." Lorenzo explained.

"We researched and found a company in California that we worked with for five, six months to develop the line; they make the product.  We chose clear, see through bottles so you know how much you have left, you don't have to guess.  And the colors are different, so when you're in the shower you can tell which one is shampoo, which one is conditioner.  It was quite an experience - and investment."

It was also an education for his stylists, who tried all of the products and had the fun of naming some, among them "Moisture Bliss," Kiwi Glass," "Texture Rising"and Joann's favorite, "Give Me Lift"."

I listen to what my customers have to say.  After 20 some years in the business, I'd better."  Lorenzo said with a grin.

Joann is glad he does.  She's also glad that she and her husband decided to move to Vero Beach 23 years ago.

"We came here from Illinois, a small town 65 miles south of Chicago where we had an auto dealership.  My husband was on the board of Velde Ford and he managed the used-car department.  I worked part-time for Cooper on the beach for about 10 years.  It took me awhile to get used to the heat and humidity, which wasn't the problem with my hair.  It was the fact it was so fine and thin.

"Now after I wash it with Lorenzo's shampoo for color-treated hair, I just 'spritz' on a little root-lifter to make it fuller, then I use his gel product to give it some body," Joann smiled as Lorenzo fluffed the hair framing her forehead.

"Now people are always asking where I get my hair done."

P.S.: Joann and I have a lot in common - age, attitude, and fine, thin hair.  That's what prompted me to admire her stylish look and in turn write her story.  As the old saying goes, "Hair is woman's crowning glory" - and Joann's glows.
